After-Dancing Relief with Coconut Massage Balm

After a wild night of crazy dancing in 4” stilettos with my friends (what was I thinking?), my legs are aching as if I’d climbed Mount Everest (ok, maybe not that badly).  So what’s a girl to do? Make some delicious and oh-so-soothing coconut massage balm and rub it into my sore calves, quads, and hamstrings.  It’s really so easy and works wonders.  Try it!

After-Dancing Coconut Massage Balm

1 big scoop of Coconut Oil (about 4 oz)

2 drops of Eucalyptus Oil

2 drops of Lavender Oil

1 drop of Rose Geranium Oil

Directions:

Put the coconut oil in a glass bowl and place it in the microwave for about 10 seconds, just enough so that it softens up and is not clumpy.  Add the aromatherapy oils – you can adjust them to your liking.  You can use the oil in the liquid form, or wait until it hardens up again and use it like a balm (which is the way I prefer it) so that it melts into your skin.

The Benefits of Coconut Oil

The health benefits of coconut oil are huge, including; hair care, skin care, stress relief, maintaining cholesterol levels, weight loss, increased immunity, proper digestion and metabolism, relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV and cancer, dental care, and bone strength. These benefits of coconut oil can be attributed to the presence of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, and its properties such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, soothing, etc.

How is Lauric Acid Used by our body?

The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, which helps the body in dealing with viruses and bacteria causing diseases such as herpes, influenza, cytomegalovirus, and even HIV. It helps in fighting harmful bacteria such as listeria monocytogenes and heliobacter pylori, and harmful protozoa such as giardia lamblia. As a result of these various health benefits of coconut oil, though its exact mechanism of action was unknown, it has been extensively used in Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medicinal system.
